One Down, Eleven to Go
Reboot Your Motivation To Finish 2019 Strong
It’s January 29th.
We’re about one month in to 2019 and whether you’re a goal person, a resolution person, or a reflection person, I’ll wager that on December 31st you had at least some thoughts about what you wanted to have happen in the New Year.
Statistically speaking, the proverbial ball is about to drop.
80% of resolutions fail by the second week of February. And only 8% of people will succeed in make a significant or lasting change.
That means between 80 and 92 out of every 100 of you will go into 2020 pretty much the same way you began 2019.
It’s crunch time for people, and February is a tipping point.
Those of you who are focused and actively working on your goals two weeks into February, are statistically likely to make at least progress this year. So if you haven’t quite gotten momentum yet, this is a good time to dig in.
If you’ve been working at it, and you’re beginning to feel frustrated, unfocused, or demotivated, (80 out of 100 of you reading this probably can relate) stay the course! These next two weeks will pull you past the first big hurdle and provide fuel for the next one.
But what about the 8 who will go on to change their lives this year?
What sets them apart?
THIS WEEK:
Join the 8%
Three steps to put in place right now….
Revisit your goal/resolution/bucket list. Whatever you call it, this is the week to revisit what you want to create this year and make sure that you are 100% crystal clear on what that is.
This means “eating healthy” “finding my purpose” “making more money” and “losing weight” are all out - they’re too vague. Drill down on what feeling state you want to achieve and what you’re planning to do to accomplish it.. Let go of the outcome. OK, this sounds counter-intuitive, but it’s key. Now that you’re very specific on what you want to achieve, add this little ending “…and while I’m working to (name your goal) I will remain open to and aware of other options and opportunities that may serve me even better.”
It’s useful to write this out and read it in the morning, mid day and each evening before you go to bed.Get help. I can’t emphasize this enough. No one, and I mean no one, can do it alone. Create your support network with as much clarity and specificity as you did your goals.
The critical thing here is to have adequate support in place before you need it. Change is not only difficult for the person making the change, it can be confusing for the people around them. And when people are confused, they get scared. And when people are scared, they try to put things back the way they were. This can create friction that damages relationships and undermines growth. By having a strong support system in place, you’ll be able to navigate the bumps and change-back messages and smooth the way your success and even strengthen your relationships along the way.
